10 Best Moments of Grammy 2020

Although the night was poignant, Lizzo opened the show with her powerhouse performance. Lizzo was dressed in an off-shoulder floor-length black sparkling gown and dedicated her performance to Kobe Bryant. She performed – “Cuz I Love You,” assisted by orchestra and ballerina. Lizzo then changed into a long sleeve lined-bodysuit and joined the dancers for a string-heavy take on “Truth Hurts.” She ended herperformance with her solo flute session. Also, she took home three GRAMMYs —Best Pop Solo Performance for “Truth Hurts,” Best Urban Contemporary Album for Cuz I Love You and Best Traditional R&B Performance for “Jerome”.

The night began by remembering Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna’s unfortunate demise in a helicopter crash earlier in the day. The Grammy’s host, Alicia Keys, payed her deepest respect to the tragic loss of the basketball legend. Standing at the Staples Center, where Bryant played his entire career with the LA Lakers, Keys referred to the center as “the house that Kobe built”. Alicia then asked the audience to hold Kobe, Gianna and all those who were lost in the helicopter crash in their thoughts, prayers and spirits. Alicia opted for a somber look and was dressed in a silver gown with her hair pulled back in a bun. She was then joined by Boys II Men to sing an A-Capella version of “It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye.”

Tyler, the Creator won his first ever Grammy for the Best Rap Album for his 2019 project IGOR. His elation and excitement was unmatchable. In addition to his first ever Grammy win, he gave an unforgettable on-stage performance. His power-packed performance literally set the stage on fire. He was dressed in his signature IGOR costume – a pink and magenta suit with a platinum blond wig. He was surrounded by dozens of doppelgangers and gave a legendary performance. He performed “EARFQUAKE” and “NEW MAGIC WAND” joined by R&B legends such as Charlie Wilson and Boyz II Men. His fiery performance ended with Tyler falling back into a pit of fire and disappearing from the stage.

Camila looked breathtakingly adorable in a pink gown and chose to perform a track near her heart. She sang “First Man” which she wrote for father Alejandro. The track was a simple, stripped-back piano ballad which depicts the moment a father walks his little girl down the aisle. While she sang, pictures of her childhood appeared on a screen behind her, making everyone teary-eyed. Towards the end of her performance, she descended the stage and sang directly to her father while tears rolled down his face. The father-daughter shared a hug after her performance and the audience was reminded of Bryant-Gianna’s bond.

Lil Nas X fused different genres in his performance of country rap single “Old Town Road”. He wore a black and silver sparkly cowboy hat and silver outfit to give a high octane and compelling performance. He moved through a variety of ever-changing colorful sets where he was joined by  Billy Ray Cyrus, Diplo, K-pop seven-piece BTS, and 13-year-old viral yodeling sensation Mason Ramsey. This performance not only won hearts but also created history as BTS became the first ever Korean artists to perform at the Grammys. Also, Mason, who is only 13 years old, was one of the youngest Grammy performers ever.

Demi Lovato looked stunning in her white Christian Siriano gown with a studded, corseted top. She debuted her song “Anyone,” which she wrote days before her overdose, calling it “a cry for help.”  Her comeback performance was well-received by her fans and they gave her a standing ovation. This emotional song marked the first time Lovato has performed onstage since the overdose in 2018.

Billie Eilish dominated this year’s Grammy awards. The 18-year-old singer/songwriter Billie Eilish won five GRAMMYs for Song Of The Year, Best New Artist, Record Of The Year, Album Of The Year and Best Pop Vocal Album. She became the first woman to sweep four big Grammys. Along with this, she also gave a smashing performance of her song “When the party’s over” accompanied by her brother Finneas on piano. Eilish mesmerized everyone with her emotional, raw and gut-wrenching vocals.

The pop music princess, Ariana Grande gave a jaw-dropping performance of the three song medley. Grande wore a black Givenchy gown when she started her performance with the song “Imagine”. Then she transitioned into the second part of her performance to sing “7 Rings” and “Thank U, Next”. She was joined by an orchestra and a team of dancers clad in silky robes. Here, her outfit consisted of a lacy lingerie set, a matching pair of gloves, and a fuzzy robe over a pair of fishnet-style tights. Her performance transformed the Staples Center stage into a bedroom and slumber party.

Along with Kobe Bryant, Nipsey Hussle was also honored in this year’s Grammys. Hussle was a rapper and an activist. He was tragically killed in March 2019 at the age of 33 and posthumously received one GRAMMY Award during the Premiere Ceremony, Best Rap Performance for “Racks In The Middle” featuring Ricch and Hit-Boy. In light of his passing, Hussle’s collaborators and some of the most respected figures in hip-hop, R&B and gospel: DJ Khaled, John Legend, Meek Mill, Kirk Franklin, Roddy Ricch and YG gave a soul-stirring performance. The performance featured dancers clad in white, with garments paying tribute to Hussle’s Eritrean heritage. The end of the performance illuminated a photo of both Hussle and Bryant.

The diversity and global appreciation was a main highlight in this year’s Grammys. The very proof of this was the presence and moving performance of Rosalía. The Spanish sensation performed “Juro Qué,” and “Malamente”. She wore a white fringed body suit with sky-high platform sneakers and diamond encrusted nails. Rosalía won her first Grammy award in the best Latin rock, urban or alternative album category for El Mal Querer.
