With the end of Season 5, the HBO TV series Game of Thrones has now fully caught up with George R.R. Martin’s book series. The show is now expected to diverge more than it already has from the book. The show will still have input from the original author Martin. Any fans of the book that expect to have answers and spoilers don’t have an advantage over TV show viewers anymore. What lies ahead for everyone in Westeros and Essos is a mystery to all Game of Thrones fans. The last episode of the season had a number of quick cuts in important scenes. These cliffhangers add that much more mystery to what will happen in the next season. Here is a review of cliffhanger moments to keep the discussion going.

9Daenerys reunites with the Dothraki Horde

After her dramatic escape from the Sons of the Harpy attack in Mehreen, Daenerys appears in a mountain steppe with Drogon, the one dragon that Daenerys hadn’t locked away. While Drogon is recovering form his wounds, a horde of horseman charge and surround Dany. Will Khaleesi lead the horde again, or do the Dothraki have other plans? Why did she drop her ring on the ground?

8Cersei gets her “just“rewards


After an unfair trial by the Faith Militant, a religious inquisition that she helped start, the conniving Queen Regent Cersei Lannister is sentenced to Walk of Shame from the Great Sept of Baelor to the Red Keep. Her hair is cut and she is stripped and made to walk through a mob throwing trash and sometimes feces at her. One of the most hated women in the series gets some justice. At her lowest point, she is more pitied than hated.

7Ser Robert Strong appears

Right after her shaming and punishment from the High Septon, Qyburn introduces a new Kingsguard member Robert Strong to her.

It has not been confirmed, but fans of the book think that Robert Strong is Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane brought back to life after being poisoned in his fateful fight with Oberyn ”The Viper” Martell.

6Sansa and Theon/Reek take a leap

Sansa tries to escape Dreadfort and the torture and abuse of Ramsay Bolton when Myranda and Reek catch her at a rampart. Regaining his conscience, Reek rescues Sansa by throwing Myranda to her death. Sansa and Theon/Reek take a leap off the tall ramparts. The scene cuts before we see what happens to them on the ground.

5Brienne sentences Stannis to death.

Having lost his family to human sacrifice, and his army to the cold and a blitz attack by Ramsay Bolton, Stannis Baratheon escapes and kills two Bolton stragglers. Brienne of Tarth finds him while waiting for Sansa to give a signal to rescue, and discovers that Stannis had assassinated his brother Renly back in Season 2.

Brienee summarily sentences Stannis to death when he admits the truth. The scene cuts to Ramsey executing a Baratheon soldier just before Brienne’s Valyrian sword strikes Stannis.

4Myrcella knows the truth about Jaime and Circe

While sailing back from Dorne to King’s Landing, Jaime and Myrcella have a frank talk. Myrcella tells Jamie that she knows that he is her father. She shows forgiveness and happiness that Jaime is her father. It is not clear whether his fiance Trystane Martell, or others in the court of Dorne, know about Jaime and Cersei’s secret.

3Myrcella takes the secret to the grave

In a shocking twist, Myrcella succumbs to a poison that Ellaira Sand delivered to her with a kiss at the dock. This came just seconds after the tender moment between her father and her. How will the Houses Lannister and Martell react?

2Death pays for life

While Arya trains as an assassin for the Faceless Men in Braavos, she gruesomely murders Ser Meryn Trant, believing the Ser killed her sword instructor Syrio in her escape from King’s Landing. She hallucinates Jaqen H’ghar drinking poison and dying as punishment for Arya taking a life without permission. Arya hears and sees Jaqen behind her, with the body of one of the faceless intead of Jaqen. As she takes different faces off the dead body, Arya loses her sight and panics.

1Jon Snow has an “Et tu Brute?” moment

After the Black Watch/Wildling alliance suffered in their defeat against the White Walkers in Hardhome, the goodwill that Jon Snow tried to build fell apart. Loyal members of the Black Watch took the law into their hands and assassinated their leader. The last scene of Season 5 cuts with Jon Snow bleeding in the ground with no clear answer.

Jon Snow’s actor Kit Harrington reported that the show runners told him that Jon Snow would not be coming back the next season.

But fans hold out hope for Jon because Melisandre, the alluring Priestess of the Lord of Light, is now at Castle Black. Other priests of the Lord of Light have the power to revive the dead. Could she come to his aid?
